COWGIRLS NOVEMBER LUNCHEON

  • LITTLE AMERICA HOTEL Cheyenne, WY 82001 United States (map)

COWGIRLS NOVEMBER LUNCHEON: Monday, November 10 at LITTLE AMERICA HOTEL, 11:30 am-1 pm

GUEST SPEAKER: MIKE KASSEL, Curator, CFD Old West Museum, presenting BLAZING TRAILS ACROSS WYOMING!

In the days we live in, we enjoy rocketing across the landscape in our reliable and speedy automobiles. In good weather, we can count on good roads, and in bad weather, we slow down or stay home. In most instances throughout the year, we can casually cross the vast distances in our territory enjoying air conditioning, or heat, comfortable seats, quiet conditions and hopefully a good station on the radio or perhaps a good audio book. People think nothing these days of crossing our state and generally the worst thing that could happen is we might get bored. Most of the time, the only things on our minds are a stop for the bathroom, and perhaps a gas station for fuel and a snack. Today, in Wyoming, approximately 4.7 to 5.1 million vehicles cross I-80 every year in our modern age.

But what of the first people to drive a car across Wyoming? we have all heard tales of how difficult, and excruciating, it was to cross our territory on foot, on horseback, or by stagecoach on the Oregon Trail. We have imagined tales of crossing the landscape swiftly and predictably by train. But what was it like to go across the state when there were no roads, signs, gas stations or even maps? In the early 20th century, several bold new pioneers dared to cross the formidable yet beautiful landscapes of Wyoming in early cars that were little more than rattling contraptions with no amenities and often rubber-covered fabric tires.

Join Mike Kassel as he gives us a glimpse of the daring escapades of the few who dared and blazed a trail for many millions to come!
