COWGIRLS MAY LUNCHEON: Monday, May 11th, 11:30-1:00, at LITTLE AMERICA HOTEL, CHEYENNE, WY
GUEST SPEAKER - MIKE KASSEL, Historian and Curator, CFD Old West Museum
PROGRAM: Creation of the new Frontier Park , Cattle Industry Origins, and the famous Hawaiian Competition!
In 1907, it was decided that the old Wyoming Territorial Fairgrounds couldn’t keep up with the growth of Cheyenne Frontier Day ™. Early in 1908 plans for a new fairground were swiftly put into play and the city began to transform its surroundings for an event like no other. They were so enthusiastic about the new park that they opened the steer roping event up for all comers, hoping to entice cowboys from anywhere to compete for the World Championships against Wyoming’s best. They got more than they bargained for! 1908 was a pivotal year for the decade-old celebration and became a confluence of cowboy cultures that most Americans didn’t even know existed. Come join Mike Kassel as he explores the creation of the new Frontier Park, the origins of the cattle industry, and the legendary competition in which the Hawaiians took Cheyenne!
